Provenance in Plain English: Where Did This Information Come From?
Provenance means keeping enough information to answer: where did this come from, which version was used, what changed, and can I trace the result back to its sources?
This matters because AI can combine information from many places and present the result as one smooth answer. Without provenance, it can be difficult to tell whether a claim came from a primary source, a summary, an old document, an inference, or an unsupported guess.
What useful provenance can include
Source name and link, date or version, who or what transformed the information, material corrections, and the evidence state of the final claim.
What provenance does not prove
A traceable source can still be wrong or contested. Provenance improves inspectability; it does not automatically make a claim true.
