Why Human Override Matters When AI Can Take Actions

Some AI tools only produce text. Others can send messages, change records, call software tools, move money, schedule work or control physical systems. As the ability to act increases, the cost of a mistake can increase too.

Human override means a person retains a meaningful way to approve, stop, correct or reverse important actions. It should be designed into the workflow rather than added after something goes wrong.

Four questions to ask

  1. Who is allowed to approve the action?
  2. Can the action be stopped before it completes?
  3. Can a person see enough evidence to understand why it is being proposed?
  4. If the action is wrong, what is the rollback or recovery path?

Not every low-risk action needs the same level of review. The amount of control should be proportional to the possible consequence.
