AI and Jobs — How to Think About Workforce Change Without Hype

AI changes tasks before it cleanly maps to whole jobs. A useful workforce plan examines which tasks can be accelerated, automated, reviewed differently or newly created—and which human capabilities become more valuable as the tools change.

Analyze work at the task level

  1. List recurring tasks, decisions and handoffs.
  2. Separate routine work from judgment, relationship, accountability and physical context.
  3. Identify where AI can draft, search, classify, summarize, simulate or operate tools.
  4. Identify where human verification, authority or domain expertise remains essential.
  5. Measure quality and time saved after review—not only raw generation speed.

Skills that become more important

Problem framing, evidence checking, domain expertise, data literacy, tool orchestration, security awareness, judgment, communication, recovery and learning-to-learn all matter when systems and interfaces change quickly.

Q10 workforce view

Do not evaluate productivity without benefit/burden. Track who gains time, who inherits review work, where errors move, which skills degrade or grow, and whether the change improves outcomes for the people affected.
