AI Privacy and Data — What Happens to What You Share?

AI privacy is not one question. It includes what you provide, what the service records, what connected tools can access, what is retained, who can retrieve it, and whether the data travels into training, analytics or third-party systems.

Trace the data path

  1. Input: What text, files, images, audio, identifiers or secrets are entering?
  2. Identity: Is the interaction tied to a person, account, organization or device?
  3. Retention: How long are prompts, outputs, logs and files stored?
  4. Training: Can any of this material be used to improve or train models?
  5. Tools: Which connected apps, agents or APIs can read or write additional information?
  6. Access: Who inside your organization and the provider can access records?
  7. Deletion: What can be deleted, and what may remain in backups, logs or derived systems?
  8. Jurisdiction: Where is data processed and which rules apply?

Why people care

In Pew Research Center's June 2026 study, privacy concerns were cited by 79% of U.S. adults who did not use chatbots as at least a reason for not using them.
